Clean that Dirty Foot Spa! Whirlpool Foot Bath Cleaning Recommendations

So you love getting a pedicure at the nail salon. It's a great way to relax and get your feet looking beautiful.

How do I know if the whirlpool pedicure bath is clean?

You don't know unless you watch how the foot spas are cleaned by the pedicurists.

It's a time consuming process to clean the whirlpool pedicure baths.

It takes time to properly clean the whirlpool foot bath between clients and even more time at the end of the day.

Most pedicurists will spray and wipe the basin between clients, which is good, but not good enough. Bacteria and fungus thrive in the damp pipes and jets!

I want to share with you the EPA's whirlpool foot bath cleaning recommendations for salons and spas so you know how these pedicure bath should be cleaned so you will know what questions to ask at the nail salon.

EPA Recommended Cleaning and Disinfecting Procedures for Spa Basins in Salons

It recommended by the EPA that the foot spa is cleaned Between each client in this way:

1. Water is to be drained and debris removed.

2. Foot basin is to be cleaned with soap and water.

3. Foot basin is then to be disinfected with a hospital grade disinfectant and remain wet with the disinfectant for 10 minutes. Whirlpool, air jet and pipe-less spas must be circulating during that time.

This cleaning procedure can be started after your feet are finished soaking and while other parts of your pedicure are taking place.

The cleaning process doesn't stop there.

According to the EPA, each night the whirlpool, air jet and pipe-less foot spas should be cleaned in this way:

1. The filter screens, inlet jets and all other removable parts should be removed and all debris must be clean out from behind and in them.

2. All parts need to scrubbed with brush using soap or disinfectant.

3. Parts are then rinsed and reassembled.

4. The basin is then filled with water and hospital grade disinfectant and run for 10 minutes.

5. Finally, the whirlpool is rinsed and air dried.

You will not know how the foot spas are really cleaned at night. You will have to take the salon's or spa's word for it.

Alternatives to the Whirlpool Foot Baths

There are salons and spas that don't use whirlpool foot baths. You are guaranteed a clean pedicure if you go to a salon or spa that uses foot baths that use disposable liners.

We use these Footsie Baths with disposable liners at Styling Point. They heat and gently vibrate, They may not be as powerful as the whirlpools, but they are way cleaner!!!

Stainless steal soaking bowls are another safe option because they can be quickly cleaned and disinfected between clients.

Be sure to ask the salon or spa a few questions about the kind of foot baths they use before you schedule your appointment.

The reception desk most likely will not know the exact cleaning procedures the salon uses to clean that dirty foot spa.
Ask for a manager for the cleaning and disinfecting details. If they won't tell you, move along!

See me at the salon for a super clean pedicure!

White Bumps Under Eyes: Milia

Have you noticed that you have little white looking bumps under your eyes? Some people call it chicken skin because the bumps look like plucked chicken skin. 🐔 Most likely those little white bumps are milia. They can feel hard or pearly. These bumps are not acne. Milia can occur when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the outer layer of skin. Keratin becomes trapped and builds up. A small benign cyst can form which is the milia. It's a cyst!?! Don't let that word scare you. They are harmless, but unwanted bumps.  They can occur on any area of the skin that tends to be on the dry side. They cannot be squeezed out like a blackhead or pimple because they have no opening. A layer of skin covers them. A hole must be created in them using a needle, then they can be extracted out. Read more about blackhead, whiteheads and blind pimples This is a common problem for the under-eye area. It is a dry, delicate area of the skin. I see it a lot on my clients. Heavy products

Dermatofibromas

This post is all about dermatofibromas and some remedies to help make them look better and ways hide them. It includes my Amazon Affiliate Links to help you find the products I talk about. Q. I have this brown bump on my leg that won't go away. What can I do about it? A. It could be a dermatofibroma. I see them often on my leg waxing clients. A dermatofibroma is a tan to brown benign raised bump more common in women than men and occur commonly on the legs. The bump feels hard under the skin and can be itchy, tender and easily irritated. A doctor will tell you not to worry about it because it's benign, but it's kind of ugly! Dermatofibromas are also called Benign Fibrous Histiocytomas. They are the result of some sort of injury to the skin such as an ingrown hair or a bug bite.  Be careful when shaving because a dermatofibroma may bleed and become sore if nicked. Don't think you can get rid of it by shaving it off. It will be an awful looking sore and will j
