Does a waterproof Eye Liner Pencil hold up better than a regular plain old pencil? I decided to put it to the test.
I picked up a Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner at Ulta. It was a great beauty bargain in their 21 days of Beauty promotion, buy one get, one free. A great deal since one pencil is $20.00.
I decided to put it to the test against my favorite drug store brand Prestige, which sells for $3.95 on Prestige.com, to see which one held up the best. The Prestige pencil I tested is not waterproof but it has always held up well for me. Prestige does make an automatic waterproof pencil ($5.95) like the Stila pencil, but I happen to like the basic pencil the best. You can sharpen it to get a fresh clean point. So that's what I used.
On one eye I used Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Stingray. On the other eye I used Prestige Classic Khol Eyeliner in Black. I applied both in the same fashion: the liner then smudged the line lightly with a flat liner brush and a matte black eye shadow to help set it in place. I then went about my day which included a walk and painting my living room. Here is what my eyes looked like after 12 hours of wear.
Both held up well, but I think the Stila pencil held up a little better. The Stila eye stayed darker and was less smudgy. It did look less smooth on the lower line, though. It got sort of cakey. The Prestige eye had a little more smudging. The line was more worn off on the upper inner line and on the lower lash line. There is no cakey look which is good. Both eyes had a little smearing on the outer corners a little bit more on the Prestige eye.
Both smeared in a 10 minute shower. Surprising, the Stila was easier to remove with eye makeup remover and was less irritating to my sensitive eyes.
There was a difference, but not a drastic difference. If you want to save money, use the less expensive Prestige pencil for everyday use and save the expensive Stila to use for special occasions.
Note: Stila is no longer a cruelty free product. Wait, it's back to being cruelty free!!!

I have been using Prestige eye and lip pencils for years. Every once in awhile I will try a more expensive brand, but find that they are not worth the higher price and always go back to prestige brand pencils.
