How to Keep a Tan Longer Skin Care Tips

I am back from another fabulous Jamaica vacation and my skin feels soft and wonderful! 

We always like to stay in Negril. A long walk beautiful Seven Mile Beach is good for the soul. The sea is calm and crystal clear with infinite shades of turquoise. Plus, there is nothing better than sipping a Dirty Banana while watching the famous Negril sunsets burst with exquisite color. 

My skin always feels so good after my Jamaica vacations even after spending lots of time in the sun. You may think it would feel dry from all that sun exposure, but the moisturizing properties and UV protection of sunscreen help keep the skin in beautiful condition while playing in the sun.

The high humidity in Jamaica is also great for keeping the skin hydrated and soft feeling. 

The simple fact that the skin sweats in the warm and sunny 86 degree weather brings moisture to the surface of the skin providing hydration. 

Then, there is the healing salt water of the Caribbean Sea. 

All I know is, I feel refreshed and my skin feels fantastic!

I come home with just a nice light golden tan due to the daily slathering an SPF 30 sunscreen. Next comes the challenge of keeping the skin glowing, moist and soft in the chilly Philadelphia Autumn weather. Holiday party time is right around the corner and it's always nice to have a little golden color when wearing a cute little party dress. Now I need to make that tan last.

Let me share with you a few skin care tips to help you keep a tan longer and hydrate the skin to make it look smooth and glowy!

How to Keep A Tan Longer

1. No Exfoliation

To keep a beautiful golden tan a little longer,
avoid any exfoliation of the skin. Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells. Those dead cells contain the color that is your tan. Using a body scrub, body puff or loofah to exfoliate will speed up the natural shedding of dead skin cells quickly fading your tan. Even using a washcloth will exfoliate the skin.

2. Use the Right Moisturizer 
Be diligent with body oil and moisturizer. 
Tan skin will have a richer color when it is moisturized. Apply moisturizer in the morning and in the evening every day to keep the skin hydrated.  The most beneficial time to apply body oil and body lotion is immediately after a warm shower. I like to apply a thin layer of oil, after patting the skin dry with a towel. Then, slather on the lotion, cream or body butter over the oil.

Avoid moisturizers that contains Alpha Hydrox or Beta Hydrox Acids. Those exfoliating ingredients will speed up dead skin cell removal and cause your tan to fade quicker.

3. No Hot Water
Avoid a long hot shower or a long tub soaking. Hot water and the long exposure to water during a bath can actually be dehydrating for the skin. Take a short warm shower instead. That's not always easy on chilly autumn days.  Hot showers feel so good when you're chilled to the bone. 

4. Eat Orange Veggies
Eat more orange colored veggies. Eating orange colored foods high in Beta carotene can give the skin a warm glow. Have you ever seen a baby who has eaten a lot of sweet potato, butternut squash and carrot baby foods? The baby's little nose can look orange! Don't worry, you won't turn orange if you are eating a varied diet along with orange foods.

5. Self Tanner
You can always fake it. Self tanner is a sure fire way to boost your tan. Apply self tanner or a moisturizer that contains some self tanner to keep the skin looking golden.

6. Drink More Water
Water is necessary to prevent dehydrated and keep the skin looking it's best. How much should we drink per day? The experts from The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommendations are:

Women: 91 ounces (2.7 liters) per day, which equals about 11 8-ounce water bottles.

Men: 125 ounces (3.7 liters) per day, which equals about 15 
8-ounce water bottles.

It sounds like a lot!!!  Do your best. Remember coffee, tea and juice contain water so they count! Space out your fluid consumption throughout the day.

1. Avoid exfoliating the skin.
2. Use a body oil and moisturizer that does not contain Alpha Hydrox or Beta Hydrox Acids twice daily.
3. Take warm, not hot, baths and showers.
4. Eat foods high in beta carotene.
5. Add more color to your tan with self tanner.
6. Keep your body hydrated.

White Bumps Under Eyes: Milia

Have you noticed that you have little white looking bumps under your eyes? Some people call it chicken skin because the bumps look like plucked chicken skin. 🐔 Most likely those little white bumps are milia. They can feel hard or pearly. These bumps are not acne. Milia can occur when dead skin cells become trapped beneath the outer layer of skin. Keratin becomes trapped and builds up. A small benign cyst can form which is the milia. It's a cyst!?!
